DIFFERENT YOGA FOR DIFFERENT YOGIS

October 22, 2015 4:42 pm

Here at F&U, we’re yogis through and through. However, even we find ourselves lacking a bit of motivation from boredom or we just don’t feel that it’s getting our hearts racing enough to do any actual good. So we decided to change up our sessions with some popular techniques to keep us interested and coming back for more.

Vinyasa
This is a fairly fast-paced style, sometimes called “power yoga”, which requires you to move continuously throughout the class. The most well-known vinyasa sequence is the sun salutation, a flowing series of lunging, bending and stretching asanas (the term used in yoga for a pose or position of the body). Vinyasa is also often used in ‘Hotpod Yoga’ which is the same flow and pattern of movement but in an environment heated to 37 degrees. So if you want to work up a sweat, this is definitely for you!

Voga
Founder Juliet Murrell likes to describe this as “yoga with a bit of sass” which is a fast moving class that incorporates the fun, 80’s dancing technique of ‘Vougueing’. It’s extremely light-hearted and fun, but the quick transitions and funky poses will ensure you get your sweat on! Think Zumba but without the Caribbean music. It’s the perfect activity to do with a bunch of friends, as you’ll find yourself laughing the whole way through!

Ashtanga
This one’s for the seasoned yogi. The physically challenging style of this move consists of an unvarying sequence of poses – typically, you execute 70 poses in one 90minute to two-hour session, which is a lot. Ashtanga requires strength and endurance, so you’ll get the most out of it if you practice regularly. Take on the challenge, if you dare!

Jivamukti
Jivamukti, founded by David Life and Sharon Gannon, concentrates on bringing ancient teachings alive in a contemporary settings and incorporates chanting, meditation, pranayama, philosophy, and music into vigorous flowing routines. It’s a physically and intellectually stimulating method and if you enjoy focusing on your inner wellbeing and having a positive state of mind in life, this one is calling your name!
