Find your winter fitness mojo

We are proud to introduce our very own fitness guru Nina Swift.

A former journalist, she has swapped the press for press-ups and the mum-of-one is currently training to be a personal trainer with Premier Training International.

Combining her love of fitness with her passion for healthy food, the dedicated Filmorite also has a public relations role at Filmore & Union.

This week she is sharing her tips on how to beat the blues and get the most out of your workout during the winter months.

Maximise your winter workout

Ah sweet summer… Remember when it was oh so easy to make it to that 6am spinning class because the sun was actually up at that time in a morning? Or perhaps you ventured outside for a nice long run after work because it was still light and not blowing a gale.

But now Christmas is on the horizon (erm how did that happen?) and it feels like it’s permanently cold, dark and wet. Pulling the covers over our heads suddenly feels much more appealing than that spinning class and you can forget that run – it’s all about slipping into our pjs at 6pm and binging on Netflix.

Enough is enough! It’s time to get our fitness mojo back – and the good news is it’s totally possible!

Here are my top tips on how to to beat the winter blues and maximise your workout:

  1. Be a class act

Now is the time to try some of the amazing indoor classes that are out there. Whether it’s a barre class or HIIT, Body Pump or yoga, martial arts or boxing, this is the way to take your workout to the next level. Nothing beats group exercise when it comes to motivation and you are guaranteed to make some awesome new friends along the way.

  1. Smooth operator

It’s all about smoothies and juices when the weather is gloomy and you’re feeling a bit sluggish. It’s the perfect way to get in your daily dose of vitamin-packed fruit and veggies, which will make you feel amazing both inside and out. One of my favourites is the Filmore & Union Raw Energy juice.  This green giant is made with apple, spinach, cucumber, broccoli, lemon and ginger – it helps to boost your energy levels and provides the perfect pick-me up.

  1. Make time for a workout

We all keep a diary at work for meetings and appointments, so why not schedule your workouts? When you’re feeling rundown and zapped of energy, it is sooooo hard to motivate yourself to do exercise (I hear ya!), but trust me it is the best way to make you feel like you can rule the world once more. So whether it’s a run, a class or a swim, plan when you are going to do your workout and block out some time in your diary – attendance isn’t optional!

  1. Digital detox

I was always the worst when it came to my phone. I was often guilty of checking my emails in bed and before I knew it, I was reading about why Kim Kardashian doesn’t like broccoli. Phones are bad when it comes to sleep for the following reasons: You end up staying up ridiculously late, it makes it harder to mentally switch off and the unnatural light tricks your brain into thinking it’s morning, which leaves your staring into darkness, wondering why you cant get to sleep. I now leave my phone downstairs and I’ve slept better than ever, which means I’m no longer a zombie on those dark mornings. So take my word for it, ban those phones from the bedroom people!

  1. Eat real food

I love Filmore & Union because their food is pure, natural and wholesome. All the dishes are made from scratch – you won’t find anything on the menu that has been made on a factory. It’s important to eat food that your body recognises. Stay away from foods that are made with chemicals, processed, or laden with ingredients you can’t pronounce. The result – a revitalised, more energised you.

  1. Wear the right outdoor gear

If you do decide to brave the elements and head outside for a run, make sure you wear suitable clothing – layer up people! If it’s raining stick a cap on, as it stops water from getting in your eyes. If it’s dark wear a head torch, as it provides a more natural light and means you can still swing your arms and gain momentum. Finally turn up the volume on your MP3 player – when you’re blasting out Beyonce, you don’t care how miserable it is outside!
